Outline

Deforestation

Definition: Deforestation is the clearance of naturally occurring forests by logging and burning.

Thesis Statement: Although trees are one of the most widely used raw materials throughout the world, for lumber, fuel, and commodities, the destruction of trees is increasingly becoming more and more devastating throughout the world.

1. Uses of Deforestation
a. Trees are used for fuel, commodities
b. The cleared land is used for farms with livestock, settlements or plantations
c. New Labor forces are created
2. Methods of Deforestation
a. Clear Cutting
i. Cutting of mass amounts of trees
b. Burning
i. A controlled burn of a selection of trees
3. Environmental problems
a. Deforestation contributes to the greenhouse effect
i. During photosynthesis, plants remove Carbon (carbon Dioxide), and release Oxygen back into the atmosphere
ii. Without trees and plants, no Carbon is being absorbed and less Oxygen is being released into the air which results in the greenhouse effect
b. Trees released ground water, through their roots, into the ground but because of deforestation, the land tends to get much drier
c. Trees reduce soil cohesion
i. Erosion, flooding, and landslide occur without trees
d. Deforestation reduces Biodiversity
i. Tropical rainforests are 80% of the world’s biodiversity
4. Who Is Responsible
a. Farming responsible for 48%
b. Commercial agriculture is responsible for 32%
c. Logging responsible for 14%
d. Fuel wood removals make up 5%
e. All of these benefit civilization but too much effects nature
5. What is being done now?
a. High-yield hybrid crops
i. Greenhouse, autonomous building gardens, and hydroponics.
ii. Cyclic agriculture (resting and rejuvenating farm lands)
b. Forest management
i. “Slash-and-char”, not “slash-and-burn”
c. Reforestation
i. Building of forests
6. Local Solutions
a. Plant a tree where deforestation occurred
b. Spread the awareness of deforestation and encourage others to do the same
